LOVES PARK, Ill. (WIFR) - A late Wednesday afternoon fire engulfs a Loves Park apartment complex.

Fire officials said it took about two minutes to respond to the fire at the three story complex at 6011 John Court that officials say started at 5:25 p.m. Wednesday. By that time, authorities said the structure was already fully engulfed in flames.

“I got hit with the smoke and the flames going literally over my head as I opened the door, and I screamed for my daughter," said Savannah Perrin after escaping from her apartment. "As soon as she got close to me, I grabbed her arm and dragged her out of the unit.”

“I’m very scared, I’m very sad,” Perrin said. “We’ve lived here what would’ve been a month [Thursday] so we have literally just moved in, and this was supposed to be kind of like our forever place for the most part."

Gregory Kunce from the Loves Park Fire Department said they received initial reports of someone trapped. A primary and secondary search of all eleven units in the building revealed no victims. Two residents of the complex refused treatment for what Kunce said were minor injuries.

“I’m very shaken up,” said Perrin. "I think I just lost all my animals and we lost all of our belongings, so all of our clothes and food and everything is gone.”

The Illinois State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause and the Red Cross is assisting displaced families.
