ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - Vaccines will not be needed for Rockford public school students in the upcoming school year, according to Ehren Jarrett, Superintendent of Rockford Public Schools.

Masks and social distancing are still required for all students, staff and visitors in Rockford Public Schools.

Despite the updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the governor’s office about relaxing mask requirements, the directions are unchanged at RPS 205 schools. RPS schools will continue to follow guidance from the CDC, Illinois State Board of Education, Illinois Department of Public Health and the Winnebago County Health Department, according to Jarrett.

Jarrett said RPS schools are following both state and local guidance to prepare in-person instruction for all students in the upcoming school year.

“In-person instruction and having a face-to-face, direct connection with our students is what’s best for academic progress and social emotional support,” Jarrett said.

All families, from early childhood through high school, should plan for in-person instruction when school starts in September.

The school district will follow direction from the State Board of Education to provide temporary virtual instruction to students who are under quarantine because of a COVID-19 close contact and are not eligible for the vaccine under current CDC guidance. RPS 205 will not offer a remote-only option, aside from what would normally be offered for eligible students pursuant to state or federal law.

While a COVID-19 vaccine is not required for students in the upcoming school year, we want families to consider the vaccine for eligible students and their families. The vaccine is currently available for students 12 and older. Learn more and sign up for a vaccination clinic.

If a student has been vaccinated for COVID-19, contact your school nurse so student records can be updated. At this time, vaccinated students who are a close contact to a positive COVID-19 case do not need to quarantine.

Students who are new to RPS 205 must first enroll in the district: Visit here for more information. All students must register each year ahead of the start of school, and registration materials are available now.
